Dinner at Au Cheval

Yesterday I had the pleasure of finally dining at Au Cheval, on a long overdue date with Mary, one of my fellow class of 2010 Museum Education intern pals! It was our first time seeing each other in at least a year & our first time dining at Au Cheval. Needless to say, there was plenty to catch up on and plenty to nosh on while gabbing.

We managed to nab a prime seat at the bar, looking on all of the food prep and cocktail making. The kitchen is set up behind the bar, much like the counter at a deli or all-night diner. According to our server, we were sitting at the "Food Network" seats - i.e. could see every dish they were prepping. It was fantastic.

The people we were seated next to had dined there enough times to have some "authority" over the menu, enough in fact to do the ordering for us. We started with chicken liver, gherkins, and toast with butter - which Mary really liked, even though she told me she's not a liver fan! Then we had fries with a fried egg on top and two dipping sauces, one garlicky the other cheesy. With the fries arrived our enormous burger topped with thick-cut strips of bacon and another fried egg. After two cocktails and all that food, I felt like I had to rolled out of the restaurant! Luckily, I had walked a mile and a half in 90 degree heat to the restaurant, so I felt as though I'd really earned my meal.

All in all, I really liked this place. The decor was fantastic, chic, and felt retro - but not dated. Behind Mary and I's chatter was a fantastic playlist that had Peter Bjorn and John, Jens Lekman (!) and even tunes from the Drive soundtrack. I'm definitely considering coming back, and I'd love to see how the experience holds up on a Friday evening after a night of gallery hopping in the West Loop. Who's with me?
