Valentines Day Date

Yesterday night, Spencer and I went out on our first Valentine's date! I made reservations for an early dinner at La Sardine, a homey French bistro in the West Loop. Though they didn't have their Tuesday night prix-fixe special, their menu and service were in fine form. We sat down to a quiet relaxed dinner, beginning with the Lyonnaise salad - a plate of butter lettuce, homemade croutons, big hunks of bacon, a lemon vinaigrette topped with a poached egg. For the second course, we dug into steak frites, cooked to perfection and topped with a house herb butter the most gorgeous shade of green. The servings were generous, but we saved room for creme brulee, topped with fresh berries and a heart made of confectioner's sugar.

The dinner was absolutely perfect, and I couldn't have asked for a better person to share a meal with. Thanks Spencer, you're true blue!
I highly suggest paying La Sardine a visit. Their prix-fixe on Tuesdays is $27.50, and comes with an appetizer, entree, and dessert. And if you like oysters, they do a dollar oyster night on Fridays. Come to La Sardine, for a rich and hearty, home-cooked French meal in a cozy, warm, and welcoming space. It's one of my favorite spots in Chicago, and great for dates!

Cinema Love

In honor of Valentine's Day, I want to share with you my favorite on-screen couples to date. I genuinely believe in all of these couples, not just for the stories they depict, but for the believability of their on-screen chemistry. Though some of these couples end up with a happy ending, most don't. They are human, just like us, and their relationships go through the same strains and challenges that we face as well. Though most of us have not survived a sinking ship or had our memories erased, these larger-than-life struggles are metaphors for the obstacles that each of us must overcome to find happiness in our lives.

Tim & Eric's Billion Dollar Movie DATE NIGHT

Tonight was nothing short of perfect. Spencer met me at work, we took the train up to the Landmark to pick up our movie tickets, and then headed over to Reckless Records where we simultaneously waited in line AND shopped for records. I picked up the Washed Out EP on vinyl, and Il Postino, Happenstance, and The Godfather on VHS. He waited in line, and geeked out over getting to meet his heros. After the meet & greet, we went back to the theater, settled into our seats and munched on popcorn while laughing and cringing at the show. There was an hour long Q&A, which is the longest Q&A I have ever been too - they seriously answered every question, and then some. But it was really fun, and the place was full of dudes in plaid who had a lot of very weird and specific questions. We finished up the night over at the Boiler Room, over giant slices of pepperoni prizza. It was fabulous.

I'm proud to say that I just took "dinner and a movie" to a new level - and it felt great to see how truly happy Spencer was. Here's to more perfect nights like this!

Tonight: Tim and Eric's Billion Dollar Movie

Tonight Spencer and I are headed to the Landmark Theater for a special screening of Tim and Eric's Billion Dollar Movie. And the best part is, Tim and Eric will be there LIVE for a discussion following the show! And after the show, we are headed off for a slice of "prizza" at the Boiler Room by my house! Spencer is so excited that he's been making Tim and Eric inspired art. I'm excited to see him so happy! Let's just say that scoring tickets to this has earned me major brownie points in the girlfriend department. ;)

1) Red cardigan from J.Crew via source

I bought a red cardigan in Italy three years ago, that I literally loved to pieces. I wore holes in the elbows, and by the time i was through with it, it was ragged and lifeless. I've spent the last two years on a quest for a red cardi to match up to the last, and finally, I found my dream sweater sifting through the winter sale racks at J.Crew. It's kind of hard not to love this thing to pieces all over again.

2) Homemade chicken broth and homemade chicken noodle soup via source

I heard that making your own chicken broth is the easiest thing in the world, and honestly, IT IS. I've been making bi-weekly batches of this stuff, and storing it in my freezer for future soups and stews. I've used it in chicken noodle soup and minestrone, both of which turned out heavenly. Simple, solid ingredients in your kitchen, a few hours of stewing, and voila, you have golden delicious broth for meals to come!

Simply put, I've jumped on the bandwagon and am addicted to Downton Abbey along with everyone else in the blogosphere. I'm surprised I hadn't watched it sooner, given it begins with the sinking of The Titanic and my love of glorified soap operas. The clothes are fabulous, Maggie Smith's deadpan delivery is to die for, and the drama never ends. Not to mention the intro song is perpetually stuck in my head. All I have to say is, "Welcome to Downton Abbey" is the new "Welcome to the O.C., bitch."

I've been loving my Hunter Wellies over the course of the last year, but the fleece socks weren't quite keeping my feet warm enough. My roommate Kathy has been swearing by Smartwools since I met her years ago, and after wearing them all winter, I am too. These babies keep your feet warm AND dry. Oh, and they last forever. So before you balk at the $17 price tag, tell yourself this is an investment worth making.

5) The Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret via source
David Cross was on Wait Wait Don't Tell Me a few weeks ago, in addition to having a small blurb in the New Yorker - both of which mention his latest project, The Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret. The episodes are short and absurd, as they chronicle a crazy two week period in which Todd Margaret manages to make chaos out of thin air, and damage just about everything he touches in his business trip to England. I'm not going to lie, it took me a couple of episodes to get into it, but I definitely urge you to check this show out!

6) Damien Hirst at Gagosian Galleries / Dots via source
And last, but not least, Damien Hirst's shows of his dot paintings simultaneously filling all 11 of Larry Gagosian's galleries worldwide. This series of shows has been getting crazy hype and mad reviews for how controversial it is to have paintings of "nothing" filling all eleven galleries, for incredibly high price points. The art world is both enthralled and pissed, and I'm loving watching this unfold. Personally, I like them and I find the concept to be funny. And along with the controversy of this show, comes an increasing trend that I like to call "Dots". Dots are everywhere - in fashion, in advertising, even food (see, the macaron trend).

The Bagel

Ever since I was a little gal, my family has been practicing the art of dining at Jewish delis. One of our all-time-favorites is The Bagel on Broadway, with its fast moving servers, stainless steel tables, and red vinyl booths. When I was younger, I'd often order the corned beef hash with fried eggs and hot cocoa. My tastes haven't evolved much, though occasionally I stray for a lox platter with an everything bagel and cream cheese. Oh, and instead of the cocoa, I'm drinking coffee.

Lox, cucumber, tomato, onion, olives, cream cheese, everything bagel, pickles, and coffee.

Because, to put it simply, I want my breath to smell as terrible as possible before noon.

The atmosphere hasn't changed a bit over the years, the place looks and feels the same. In a time and place where restaurants come and go with the seasons, I have to say it's almost a relief that places like the Bagel not only exist, but persist to offer classic dishes, quickly, in a no-nonsense manner, and always with a side of pickles. I've had the pleasure of eating here twice in the last month with sorority sisters from Knox, and let me tell you, it is such a treat to be able to share old traditions with new friends. Not to mention, we all grew up eating here and can now continue to dine in each others' company. Most recently, I ate with Carly, and it was an absolute blast. We were laughing non-stop! And after, we popped into Hanig's Footwear for wool socks, and left the store with discounted Hunter wellies for $30, because they were the display shoes - naturally, we loved the deal.

For New Years Eve, the ladies of the Holiday Inn graciously hosted a party in our new digs. It was the first time we had a large gathering of guests, and my first time throwing a bash in my adult apartment! Naturally, I went overboard with food-prep and last minute shopping, but am glad to say I only had one major meltdown before the countdown. All in all, it was a great night. Thanks to the folks who dropped by to ring in the new year with us!!

Summer Corn Chowder

I made this chowder last summer with fresh corn from the farmer's market, and loved it so much, that I made it twice. What's great about this recipe is that it is one of those soups that gets better overnight in the fridge, and tastes good both cold and hot. It combines lovely fresh summer flavors with a bit of spice from the hot peppers. Well into the thick of winter, I could use a bowl of this right about now.

This recipe, like most of the ones I try, popped up in my googlereader. It's from the food52blog, which is a blog composed entirely of reader submissions. Each week, readers contribute their recipes, and then the recipes are voted on. The winning recipe is the recipe of the week, hence the name food52. Food52 recently released a cookbook made up of their winning recipes over the course of a year, check it out!

And now, without further ado, I give you Summer Corn Chowder!
Ingredients serves 6
6 medium ears of corn
6 strips of bacon, cut into half inch pieces
1 small onion
1 medium poblano, finely chopped
1 jalapeno pepper, seeded and finely chopped
1 small celery rib, finely chopped
3 medium tomatoes, peeled, seeded, and chopped
2 medium boiling potatoes (about 1 pound), peeled and cubed
1 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon ground all spice
pinch of sugar
1 small bay leaf
2 cups light cream, at room temperature
1 cup milk
freshly ground black pepper
chopped parsley for garnish

Cooking instructions
1) Working over a bowl, cut the corn kernels from the cobs at about half their depth. Then, using the back of the knife, scrape the cobs over the bowl to release all the "milk"; set aside.

2) In a large saucepan, fry the bacon over moderately high heat, stirring occasionally, until crisp, about 10 minutes. Transfer the bacon to paper towels to drain. Crumble and reserve.

3) Discard all but 3 tablespoons of the bacon drippings from the pan. Add the onion and cook over moderate heat until golden, 4 to 5 minutes. Add the poblano pepper, jalapeño and celery and cook until slightly softened, about 2 minutes. Add the tomatoes, potatoes, salt, allspice, sugar, bay leaf and the reserved corn kernels and their "milk" and stir well. Cook over moderate heat until mixture begins to sizzle.

4) Reduce the heat to low. Cover and cook, stirring occasionally, until the potatoes are tender, 35 to 45 minutes. Stir in the cream and milk and bring just to a boil. Remove from heat and season with black pepper to taste. Ladle the chowder into bowls and garnish with the crumbled bacon and parsley.

Note: This soup is labor intensive to prep, it's a lot of cutting/seeding/peeling/shucking, etc. I suggest doing this with a partner, so that you don't get too exhausted! It can also be made vegetarian by simply excluding the bacon and sauteeing the vegetables in olive oil rather than bacon fat.

Tabitha's Sloppy Joes

Last night I had the pleasure of making Tabitha's Sloppy Joes. After seeing her post last week, the idea of eating homemade sloppy joes was planted in my head like Inception, and I just couldn't shake it. So after work, Spencer and I make an expedition in the snow to get the ingredients for what might be one of my new favorite recipes. I like my SJ's sweet, so I added an extra tablespoon of brown sugar. With a slice of cheese on top, this delicious sandwich had me traveling back to the lunch counter at Maid Rite in Galesburg.

2011 A Year in Review

Upon entering 2012, I thought it'd be good to revisit my 2011 New Years resolutions and goals, just to see how many of them I was able to accomplish.

CAREER AND EDUCATION GOALS
With regard to my Career and Education Goals, on paper, you could say I failed miserably. I did not take the GRE, apply to graduate school, apply for a job in Pittsburgh, or put together my Real World audition tape. I know, how tragic. In reality, I developed contacts and connections in the local art scene that are incredibly important to me, and in the long run have made my life here in Chicago feel more rooted. Additionally, my time as a temp paid off - after over a year of hard work, I was offered a full-time position at the Art Institute of Chicago!! While grad school is still in the back of my mind, I'm pretty content with where I am right now, and I'm looking forward to growing and learning in my new role at the museum.

SELF-IMPROVEMENT GOALS
Holy mole did I put a lot of things on this list.
- I did in fact re-do my room, only to move out shortly after the project was completed. Was it worth it? YES, 100%. And knowing that I was able to achieve a majority of it without anyone else's help (or funding) was incredibly empowering!
- I am pretty sure I was able to read a book a month, if not completely on a rigid schedule. I even blogged about some of them!!
-As far as snail-mail goes, I'd say I made a pretty decent pen-pal in 2011. I even did a fun holiday mailing, which based on the positive feedback, I think I'm going to try to do annually!
-The blog has done really well this year! My goal to be more diligent with my entries paid off, I doubled my blog posts this past year! I also bought my domain! But the best part definitely would have to be the amazing people I have met through Edie and Andy, and the meet-ups I've been able to attend. Readers and bloggers, you rock!
-Go to the beach in a bikini, I know, what a strange goal. I remember buying my first bikini being a rite of passage for me as a teenager, but over the course of the last few years I've been relying heavily on one-pieces and cut-offs as a way of covering up. After some reflection, I realized, I'm only 23! And I'm tiny! So for the first time in years, I bought myself a new bikini that I rocked the entire time in I was in Cuba!! And I looked fabulous.

FRIEND GOALS
Going away to college resulted in my losing touch with some close girlfriends from high school. And following college graduation, I fell out of touch with some gals from college! I've been in touch with my lady friends, and am happy to say we are still amicable!

TRAVEL GOALS
-I visited Adolfo in Germany.
-I visited my friends in Kansas City.
-I visited friends in NYC.

While I didn't achieve every goal on the list, I feel as though I accomplished so much in the last year. I took over my room, did a major closet overhaul, and kept up the blog. I started writing restaurant reviews, writing and photographing with Randolph Street Market, and contributing to make-space. I moved out, got a tattoo, was offered a job at a museum I love, and am dating a boy that makes me really happy!! 2011 was a complete success, and I'm so lucky for all of the opportunities I have had, the friends I have made, and the places I have gone.

2012 BRING IT ON.

An Object of Beauty

Last month I read Steve Martin's An Object of Beauty. As a self-proclaimed-art-affcionado, a long time fan of name-dropping artists and galleries, and a lover of books with pictures (see: Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, and my entire career as an art history major) - it should come as no surprise that I adored this book. Lacey Yaeger the protagonist is both heroic and pathetic all wrapped into one, but let's not summarize or generalize here. Steve Martin creates a character inside of a somewhat realistic depiction of the expanding art world from the 90's to present day, always shrouding the conflicts and triumphs in a blanket of wit and humor. Names and characters come and go mirroring trends in the art world. Place is just as much a part of this story as the people in it - New York City, and the definitive art neighborhoods within, Uptown galleries versus the Downtown scene. Where you are is just as important as who you are. And when factors in just as much as well, as Lacey deals with the aftermath of very real current events including 9/11 and the collapse of Wall Street in 2008.

If you have a moment, love art, and possess a sense of humor, you will truly love this book. Not to mention, there are lovely color reproductions to tantalize you...

Highlights from The Publican

Back in the fall, I had the pleasure of dining at The Publican to celebrate my sister's 25th birthday. I brought my camera and snapped some shots of what we had, though of course these photos are backlogged. But I'm a firm believer of the motto better late than never - so it's about time I share photographs of these delicacies with you.
Nestled into the industrial setting of Chicago's meatpacking district, this place is where you go for delicious meats and charcuterie - so it's go big or go home. If you're in Chicago and looking for a serious meal where you know exactly where your meat and produce are coming from, come to the Publican. The servings are family style, big, hearty, and completely for sharing. The dining room is open, and the long group tables promote fluidity in conversation. The woodwork is beautiful rustic craft, and if I have the opportunity to dine here again, I'm for sure requesting one of the private booths. As far as the food goes, I'd say my favorites hands down were the oysters, the prosciutto platter, and the pork belly.

After living in our apartment for two months, we finally installed some of our framed art. In honor of the new year, we also hosted our first party, which was a total hit. It was great having friends over, though I was not anticipating the serious dance party that erupted post-countdown. What a treat to have a place for friends to eat, drink, and be merry. Not to mention how much I loved overhearing party guests talk about what a cute apartment we had!! :D smiles all around.

This is what I wore to a Chanukah dinner before heading to the airport to pick up Spencer. I made the floral headband myself, with a bit of hot glue and fake flowers - naturally while watching Julie and Julia in front of my tiny tv. The headband was inspired entirely by the Style Rookie. This girl has more style in her pinky nail than I do in my entire 23-year-old self!

In other news, Spencer and I are having a blast thus far, just running around the city, eating delicious food, and sleeping in. Hope you all had a lovely holiday, I know I'm enjoying myself! And NYE is so close! I can't wait to bust out my sequin dress!

Warhol at the Frist

Back in August I made a weekend getaway to visit a girlfriend outside of Nashville, Tennessee. After an early morning flight, we stopped for pancakes and coffee, before swinging by the Frist for their exhibition Warhol Live: Music & Dance In Andy Warhol's Work.

I really enjoyed this show because it was completely accessible. You need not know a thing about Warhol, Pop Art, or music and dance to be able to move fluidly and confidently through the galleries. The show was approachable and open - with gallery spaces bleeding into one another through the use of music playing intermittently. Films were projected on walls, couches appear for lounging, a silver clouds room was created to stage a screening of a Merce Cunningham performance, and a space was designated to recreate an Exploding Plastic Inevitable show (ie Factory era early Velvet Underground performances).

I had a lot of fun, and was happy to have a chance to play in the Silver Clouds and excited to view a clip from Horse (1965), a film I went to the Warhol Museum to view for my thesis. I even managed to sneak a picture with the clouds!!

Last weekend consisted of baking, cooking, cleaning, and moving things around in the apartment, which we are now fondly referring to as The Holiday Inn. We just found out our storage locker assignment, and I schleped in my very first Christmas tree! Decorating is happening tonight, as well as some tidying up.It's definitely starting to feel like a cozy apartment. And though it's a bit drafty at times, I can't help but get that warm fuzzy feeling seeing the space filled with light on a Saturday afternoon.

Last night was pretty magical for art lovers and Warhol fans such as myself. The Art Institute of Chicago projected Andy Warhol's 8-hour film Empire from the Bluhm Family Terrace across the park onto the Aon Center. It took nearly forty-five minutes before anything was really visible, and even so, the image was subtle. Had I not known what to look for, I might have missed it. Though it was cold out on the Terrace, there was something so special about seeing the work of Warhol projected onto our beautiful skyline. I'm sure he would have loved it.

Andy Warhol's "Empire" at The Art Institute of Chicago

This Friday night, the Art Institute of Chicago will be screening Andy Warhol's experimental film Empire in a most unsual manner. In celebration of the new exhibition Lightyears: Conceptual Art and the Photograph, 1964-1977 the museum will be projecting the 8-hour film from the Bluhm Family Terrace across Millennium Park onto the facade of the Aon Center. That's right, a film about a building is going to be projected onto a building.

If you're downtown between 6 PM on Friday and 2 AM on Saturday, come sneak a peek at one of Warhol's most controversial and amazing films.

PS, the film almost never screens in its entirety, so this is a rare and exciting chance to check it out!

I love a lot of on screen couples, and one of my current favorites is Andy and April from Parks and Recreation. I genuinely enjoy how carefree and unorganized they are - the sheer sloppiness and spontaneity wouldn't exactly work for me, but is totally romantic in a way. I especially loved the dating game episode when Andy keeps guessing wrong and gets jealous of Neutral Milk Hotel because they're April's favorite band.

Thanksgiving in Los Angeles

LA for Thanksgiving was a really special treat. I met Spencer's entire family which was both overwhelming and exciting. They were such a welcoming and colorful bunch of people - a room full of characters, which is exactly what I like in a group. Naturally, I agonized over what to wear to such a momentous occasion, but opted for something light, breezy, comfortable, and neutral, as well as stretchy, because this was Thanksgiving we're talking about. I ended up wearing this skirt that night, and loved it so much that I wore it at least once a day for the remainder of my visit.

All in all, we had another amazing visit. We both have so much to be thankful for this year, and we really enjoyed each others' company. We watched movies, went out on a really nice date to Lucques, ordered in Chinese food, and I taught him how to bake bread! I'm looking forward to seeing him around Christmas, but what should I wear, and what should we do to acclimate him to harsh Chicago winters? All suggestions are welcome!

I was a little hesitant at first to post this one on account of the fact that this probably hurt like hell, but also because after that sucker explodes I'm not sure what I'm looking at anymore. Ass or pants? Or both? Ass-pants!

Soon I realized this GIF is a great teaching tool. Truly, one man's stupidity is another man's education (and/or garbage), not to mention the fact that he's wearing a Hawaiian shirt AND getting blown a new asshole, which may shed light on how this experiment was concieved.

I spent the night at a new friend's house this past Saturday, and woke up to discover that our parents have the same set of china that they both received as gifts for their 1980's weddings. And as if that wasn't enough to laugh about, I happened upon a mug with a plant growing in it - which is eerily similar to the plant mugs I have in my bedroom.

Obviously, this is the beginning of a very special friendship. When you have stuff like this in common, you just can't ignore it.

My boyfriend Spencer is going to be contributing over here at Edie and Andy!! Our shared love of GIFs led us to dream up this brainchild, and after a little discussion, we decided what the hell, let's have a section of my blog devoted to the analysis and commiseration of the GIFs we love. So without further ado, I give you the first post of Spencer's GIFs.

Okay Tom, you're in love, but wouldn't a simple hug suffice for shaking someone violently? We all know this stunt is more indicative of Tom's mission to appear heterosexual than anything else. But is there more? Probably not.

In October I had the opportunity to attend a sneak preview of the film Gainsbourg (Vie héroïque) / Gainsbourg: A Heroic Life at The Music Box Theater. The film was a whimsical interpretation of the biography depicting the life of the artist and musician, Serge Gainsbourg. Written and directed by the graphic novelist Joann Sfar, the feature film reads much like a contemporary graphic novel, combining elements of fantasy and non-reality with the harsh truths of history that intertwine with Gainsbourg's biography and larger-than-life rock star persona.

Let me begin with a statement of both fact and opinion regarding tastes:
If you like French films, you will like this.
If you like films set in the 1960's, you will like this.
If you like French films from the 1960's, you probably won't like this.

There is something about Gainsbourg (Vie héroïque) that felt incredibly French. Yes, it was made by a French artist/director/filmmaker, and yes, a majority of the movie took place in France. So naturally, it should feel French. But what solidified the française feel wasn't in the set or plot, but in the way things pan out for the people in the story - a sort of effortlessness that goes into leading a charmed and fulfilling life. Beginning in Paris in the late 30's, the story shows Gainsburg, then known as Lucien Ginsburg, a young boy dealing with the mingling issues of adolescence, coming of age, struggling to learn to play piano, Nazi occupation, and just plain being a boy. As a means of grappling with his day-to-day dilemmas, Ginsburg uses his imagination to escape the mundane and begins to question his sense self. Creating an alternate personality known only as his "mug", which acts as both his voice of reason and his inner demon.

The issue of identity is the driving force of this film as Gainsbourg struggles to understand himself as an artist and musician by the means of reinventing himself. Like the great Cubists working in France at the turn of the 20th century, Gainsburg's persona is fragmented to the core. With pieces of his childhood-self coexisting and intertwining with his contemporary being. In order to assert his identity, Gainsbourg uses the tools of fashion, music, visual art, and charm as a means of defining himself as a musician and artist - much like Andy Warhol did in the late 50's in New York. With his reinvention, Gainsbourg finds a woman to shape him and stand in as his muse, including iconic beauties like Brigitte Bardot and Jane Birkin. And with each reinvention of the self comes a new musical styling, ranging from the structured jazz of elite night clubs, fun French new wave pop, raunchy spoken word epithets of sex, rock, and drugs, to his later islander inspired tunes recorded in Jamaica.

What makes this film work is the cohesiveness of the many different versions of Gainsbourg that fill the space of the story. The youngest Ginsbourg played by the delightful Kacey Mottet Klein is both a young man and an old soul wrapped into one. He prophetically smokes cigarettes like the man he is to become, and flirts with woman regardless of age or beauty. The adolescent through aged Gainsbourg skillfully played by Eric Elmosnino carries the film from decade to decade. Elmosnino perfectly evokes the Gainsbourg of each new personal creation, tapping into the charm, wit, and inner-turmoil that the musician carries with him. Gainsbourg: A Heroic Life acknowledges Gainsbourg’s womanizing through depictions of his affairs and marriages, but it depicts him in a humane and honest way, attributing his imperfections to his lack of identity – giving the viewers a better understanding of the man he was, a man of great talent spurred from the great heaviness of becoming and being Gainsbourg.

This past weekend has been a whirlwind of Craigslist pick-ups, spontaneous Ikea lunches, unpacking, and getting acquainted with my new digs.

Saturday was a big day, with my bed arriving bright and early - a few minutes before the scheduled pick-up time at 9. I brought McDonald's breakfast for myself as an early morning treat, queued up my Freaks and Geeks DVD anticipating a long wait, and was pleased and surprised by how early my bed arrived!!

With the arrival of my bed, I was free to move about the cabin - so to speak. I promptly made my bed with my classic sheets from CB2, and began to unpack and organize my closet. The room is indeed tiny, BUT the bed fits perfectly, with a couple of feet to spare for my record player and a little bed side table.Yesterday consisted of driving to the Northwest suburbs to pick-up our Craigslist finds. We carted away this adorable yellow table for our dining room, and a set of four vintage baby blue chairs. The chairs remind me of Chairy from Pee Wee's Playhouse - and are in really great condition.

I love picking things up from Craigslist, because you get to peak into other peoples' homes and lives. The woman who sold us the table noticed Maya had naturally curly hair, and disappeared into her house for a few minutes only to return with a book all about the mysteries and challenges of living with and caring for curly hair. It was really funny and adorable of her to be so excited to meet us. The blue chairs came from a man whose father had the set in his office waiting room. The chairs and the table both have a bit of wear to them, but nothing a little elbow grease can't fix. And they are wonderful additions to our new place!

And of course, it wouldn't be a trip to the Northwest suburbs without a meal at Ikea. I think I have officially eaten my fill of Swedish meatballs, mashed potatoes, and lingonberry jam.

So that's my general apartment update. I spent the last two nights there and am really loving the space. I made eggs and bacon for breakfast yesterday, and it was awesome. In short, I love the apartment, and am looking forward to sharing it with you!

COOL EVENT: FOUND VS. FOUND AT THE MUSIC BOX THEATER

My all time favorite episode of This American Life is "Seemed Like A Good Idea at the Time", which features a story by Davy Rothbart of FOUND Magazine. In the story, he talks about the shenanigans he gets into while on the road on a book tour, and how found objects have the ability to tell stories both of the owner and the finder. I don't want to spoil the shear comedy of the story, so go ahead and listen to it yourself!! Also, Davy is my #2 TAL crush, because Ira Glass already has my heart in the palm of his hand.

With Found VS Found, Davy Rothbart will be battling it out against found video footage this Friday at The Music Box Theater - and I just bought my tickets. YOU SHOULD TOO!!

The apartment is coming along nicely. Both Maya and Kathy had the foresight to get beds before our lease was finalized. Supertious and ever-busy me did not want to get a bed until everything was in place, so I've been spending the last week bed hunting. Our rooms are, dare I say, comically small - mine is 85" x 98" - basically a box! But we all know the standard full bed is 72" x 54", which according to geometry can be squeezed into my itty bitty room - and if there's a will, there's a way.

After doing some extensive bed frame research, I opted for the twin/full bed frame from Crate and Barrel. My current bed is a full frame from CB2, and I adore it - though it appears that CB2 no longer sells full beds. Working with a tiny space, I realized that fanciful additions like a headboard or decorative frame simply aren't an option. What's great about this bed is that it's adjustable, and sleak. Also, a few different decorative headboards from CB can be added on should I want to do that when I'm in a bigger space. Cool right? I'm into it.

Since the frame was really reasonably priced, and my mom offered to pitch in for my mattress, I decided to go all or nothing. These things are a 10-year investment, and I know I am the kind of person who truly values the meaning of being well rested. We popped into our neighborhood Back to Bed, and after laying on a bunch of mattresses, I went for a Simmons Beautyrest with a pillow top.

Not only is this matress incredibly comfy and supportive, it's also the mattress used in the beds at The Wit Hotel. So basically, I plan on getting the kind of sleep that people get when they are on vacation AND staying at a really glamorous hotel.

I'm now taking reservations for visitors, let me know when you plan on stopping by. :)

My frame arrives Wednesday, my bed arrives Saturday - and in the meantime I'm doing some serious closet cleaning and organization to get myself mentally and physically prepared for my move. We made our first major trip to Ikea this past weekend, and did our fair share of stocking up. I am having such a blast with this move! MORE TO COME SOON!

Los Angeles, I'm Yours

This past weekend, I visited Spencer in LA. The weather was absolutely gorgeous, sunny and in the high 70's all weekend long. We slept, we indulged in peanut butter milkshakes and take out, we saw Starscream at the Troubadour, we watched The Exorcist and East Bound and Down, and mostly spent our time enjoying each others' company. Here are a few snapshots from a perfect weekend.

Between running around for final visits, employing my father for legal advice, and sending countless faxes of our lease back and forth, it's official: we got the apartment. We started moving our things in on Tuesday, and will hopefully be sleeping in our rooms within the next week. This weekend will involve trips to Target, Ikea, the Container Store, and grocery shopping. We're hoping to furnish our place with a happy mix of new and old furniture.

Saturday will be spent scrubbing, sweeping, mopping, and wiping every nook and cranny of the place. I'm planning on baking brownies to get the place smelling homey. Mexican prayer candles and smudge sticks will be burning to get the vibes feeling good and happy.

More posts as the moving and decorating process comes along. I AM SO VERY EXCITED.

This weekend has been pretty busy. Between attending the Grow Here Workshop, attending Modern Vintage Chicago, and visiting the apartment we are moving into, I am completely exhausted! This crew has been working incredibly hard to realize this project, from the seedling idea that music, radio, and community are intertwined, to submitting a proposal to the Not Just A Box Competition, and winning the chance to turn an old shipping container into the site for their new radio station.

it's a shirt, it's a skirt

Yesterday I worked a new look, and damn, can I just say that occasionally stepping out of your comfort zone is totally worth it!! For starters, let me inform you that the skirt I am wearing in my photograph is actually just an extra large men's shirt. It is not sewn. It is simply buttoned and tied, and voila! A completely new and adorable staple in my ever expanding closet. I saw this and this over at one of my current favorite fashion blogs, PANGCAKES, and after she posted a video tutorial, I knew I had to try it for myself.

After visiting "the apartment" this weekend, Kathy and I hopped over to a neighborhood thrift store where I picked up three very different and very large men's shirts.After watching the tutorial video several times, I nailed down a voluminousness bow and cascade that I fell in love with. Making this skirt is super easy and fun! There is no right or wrong way to wear it. And above all, play with it and work it.

HAPPY 90TH BIRTHDAY TO ART CLOKEY

Today is Art Clokey's 90th birthday!! He is the creator of Gumby, and one of my favorite artists working in the clay medium. He experimented in stop-animation, and paved the way for claymation as we know it. He had such a positive message in his works based on true virtue and altruistic values, which he brought to the storylines of Gumby and to those watching the shows.

Check out Gumbasia, the short film he made in art school that anticipated the creation of everyone's favorite clay dude, Gumby.

DANIEL CLOWES AT UNITY TEMPLE CHICAGO

Yes, that's right, Daniel Clowes in person! The author and screenwriter behind the incredible graphic novel turned motion picture Ghost World is going to be giving a talk at the historic Unity Temple designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. The event is in conjunction with the release of Clowes' latest book "The Death-Ray" and will also feature the cartoonist Seth (Gregory Gallant) and his newest release "The Great Northern Brotherhood of Canadian Cartoonists".

I had the pleasure to attend an event similar to this featuring Chris Ware and Charles Burns last year, and it was really cool. They each gave really funny laid back slideshow presentations explaining their work, and their approach to composing and writing graphic novels. They spoke candidly and openly about the difficulties of the medium and the challenges that writing a visually based book can have. Following the talk was an open Q&A session for even the geekiest of comic book and graphic novel fans to sort out their internal curiosities. If you are free tomorrow night and want to go to an amazing event in an even more amazing architectural space, check this out!

Tp help pass the time until I see Spencer again, I've been giving myself weekly mani-pedis, of which he picks the colors. This past Sunday I worked on this fabulous set while skyping him as he told me "yo mamma" jokes. It was a really wonderful and slightly productive way to spend my time.

Oggi e bene, perche c'e sole!

My Italian professor in Florence had a saying she taught us, oggi e bene, perche c'e sole, today is good because there is sun. And hallelujah, ain't that the truth? We have had the most perfect week of fall weather here in the Windy City, and everyday feels like a little holiday. Seriously, thank you Chicago, Indian summer, and sunshine. You have been unbelievably wonderful to us! And oh my goodness do the trees look gorgeous right now!!

I would be lying if I told you that I haven't been wearing this outfit both days of the weekend. I love how easy it is, but also how I can look put together with a quick application of lipstick and mascara. Done and done.

In this outfit I have:
1) cooked a giant pot of pea and potato curry
2) went to a friend of the family's house for a giant Jewish meal
3) had brunch in Logan Square at Lula Cafe
4) visited an apartment that I "*loved*
5) gone thrifting
6) walked through the Chicago Marathon crowd

Basically, I want to live in what I'm wearing. My apologies if I'm starting to smell funky.

Lately I've been wearing this chambray dress I snagged from the Darling Vintage etsy shop, and I love the sort of school girl feeling I get when I'm wearing it. I don't know if it's the back-to-school weather, or the fact that it looks good with every single button up, cardigan, tights, shoes combination I can think of - but this dress is just one of those go-to basics that I am currently gravitating towards.

I went to see Jens Lekman on Monday, and wound up biting the bullet and wearing SOCKS WITH CLOGS, it just felt like the most Swedish thing to do. And since I did it, I've worked the clogs and socks/ clogs and tights look multiple times this week. Just because it's the end of summer doesn't mean I have to stop wearing them. I LOVE THEM.

My new beau

Hello blog friends! Just thought I'd drop in with a quick life update!

For those of you who don't follow my twitter or know me IRL, I have a new beau! I want you all to meet Spencer!! He is super awesome. Let's just say that he makes me laugh, admitted to going through a serious Austin Powers phase, gets along really well with my cats, wore a tee-shirt that had SANDY printed on it when we met, has glasses that are cooler than mine, and prefers Betty to Veronica (as do I). Well here we are, another year has passed in the Jewish calendar, and what do I have to show for it? The last year has been intense yet completely gratifying. There have been some major life changes for me, though some of them tough and heartbreaking, I look to the past with gratitude and toward the future with hope and optimism. The rabbi's sermon today spoke of the constant growth and rebuilding that we have to do, and by golly, am I just a little plant finding my roots. Each day is a wonderful day, and I'm so excited to find what this year brings me.

Traditionally, Jews eat apples and honey on Rosh Hashanah in hopes of a sweet new year. And according to Jewish mysticism, the apple may represent the feminine aspect to G-d! Neat right? Yummy apples and a healthy dose of religious feminism all in one.

I wore this outfit last week and felt incredibly witchy in it, I mean how could I not? When paired with the ever symbolic apple, I feel fabulous, feminine, and totally heroic.

Holy cow, it is September, which means the fall temperatures have arrived!! It's so nice to have a reprieve from the heat, and to revisit all of my old friends ie wool, denim, and cardigans. This past weekend was spent gallery hopping and wandering around the city with architecture students, so obviously I had to look the part. Saturday's weather was warm, breezy, and perfect to spend along the lakefront. Though wooden clogs weren't the best choice for walking shoes, I felt pretty snazzy in this floral.

With September in full swing, galleries have flung open their doors to kick off the start of the fall art season. I had the privelege to visit Kansas City, MO last weekend for their First Fridays and spent a majority of my first evening in the Crossroads at FRONT/SPACE. FRONT/SPACE is a live-in gallery run by some of my favorite people, offering up a new show featuring a different artist monthly. The store front window invites passersby to peer into the space, and the small format of the gallery allows for an intimate experience with the works on display. The warmer temps of the early fall weather resulted in a wonderful gathering of folks outside of the picture window.

The show had an incredible amount of content - floor to ceiling works. Collages, sculptures, paintings on re-appropriated objects, with splashes of color and humor on nearly every surface. It was a bit overwhelming how much these guys produced - talk about prolific. Many of the objects were imbued with such attention to detail, you could feel how closely the artists were working. I especially liked the smaller found-object that were slipped into the mix.

It was honestly such a treat to visit this space and see the amazing things my friends are doing. SO PROUD OF YOU GUYS. If you're in KCMO in the next month, please stop by FRONT/SPACE and knock on the door!

It's been a while since I've last been on here, but that's a good thing. I've been doing a whole lot of living and enjoying these last few weeks of summer and gearing up for the fall! I just returned from a long weekend in Kansas City, MO where these photographs were taken, and I wanted to put them online asap!

This look is completely inspired by Elise of Seams Deep. I met her back in August at the Chicago Blogger Meet Up organized by the amazing Lisa of Archives Vintage. I could not get enough of Elise's positive outlook on everything from fashion to pursuing her dreams openly and passionately. Girl at the Rock Show

Blink-182 went on an indefinite hiatus in 2003/2004 which was a huge blow for me. They genuinely are one of my favorite bands, and have been since I was in the fifth grade. Following their break-up Mark, Tom, and Travis went on to get married and become dads, exploring television, reality TV, film making, and musical side projects such as Box Car Racer, +44, and Angels and Airwaves. Following Travis' near-death plane crash in 2008, the band made an announcement to get back together at the 2009 Grammy's, and I completely lost it.

They did a reunion tour in 2009 which I happily attended, but there wasn't much press or follow-up regarding any upcoming album releases. They announced a 2011 tour, I purchased tickets in the presale, and this past week they announced a release date for their upcoming album Neighborhoods. I have waited patiently over the course of eight years for this, and finally, it's all happening!!

This past Saturday, Blink-182 stopped through Chicago and my little brother and I donned our best Blink attire for the show. I reached for my 2009 tour shirt, and he went with the Blink-182 for Haiti tee. We looked fabulous, and naturally, we knew every word to every song. It was the perfect evening.

And now, the countdown begins until September 26 when Neighborhoods hits the stores and my stereo!

I SAW THE FUTURE

Last Monday I met up with a few gal friends at The Music Box Theater to see Miranda July's The Future, and damn was it good. MJ has gotten a lot of press about this movie, some of which has been less than complimentary. It seems as though she has been lumped into the twee and indiexcore of film making, and after the acclaim that Me and You and Everyone We Know recieved, it seemed inevitable that critics and filmgoers alike would have impossibly high expectations.

I read every article, every blog, and every review I possibly could before seeing this movie which prepped me emotionally, if you will. A lot of reviewers were turned off by how serious this film was, excpecting something light, humorous, and full of the kind of whimsy that we associate with July's films. But as an avid supporter of her work, I was excited for July to take her film making, directing, writing, and acting in a completely different direction.

What I loved about this movie were the subtle differences and choices that July made in relation to Me and You and Everyone We Know. I know, as a critic, doing the good 'ol fashioned compare and contrast is a total copout - but seriosuly, after giving this movie a week of marinating in my analytic brain, I found some really interesting connections.

1) The Bildungsroman ie Coming of Age Story - Where Me and You and Everyone We Know was a coming of age story from the perspective of an aspiring artist, a separated single parent, a teenage boy, and a young child - The Future was also a coming of age story. A couple finds an injured stray cat, lovingly named Paw Paw. They bring it to the vet, and then decide to keep him, knowing that he probably won't live very long. They go to get Paw Paw, and the vet tells them it needs to stay for a month - but following the wait, the cat could probably live for 5 years plus. This deadline of five years jolts the couple into asking questions such as "Where am I now?" and "Who will I be in five years?" - with an especially poignant line in which Jason, played by Hamish Linklater says, "I thought I'd be smarter".

Jason and Sophie then embark upon an exciting and nearly impossible goal to get out of their mid-thirties malaise and achieve endless goals over the course of the next month until they pick up Paw Paw, whose voice is played by July. Sophie and Jason quit their jobs. Sophie chooses to try to choreograph 30 dances in 30 days, Jason tried to save the planet, canvasing with the message the the world can be made better one tree at a time. Over the journey of the film, Sophie and Jason discover things about themselves and their future finding that their expectations and goals have not been met in fulfilling or satisfying ways. This Bildungsroman is a sadder one than that of the precurser film, but important nonetheless.

2) The Moon - Where Me and You and Everyone We Know is very much about the Sun and daytime, this film focuses centrally on the Moon and nighttime. The moon in fact plays a central character for a portion of the film, offering wisdom and solidarity to Jason in a time of need.

3) The Colors - Me You and Everyone We Know features bright bubblegummy neons that are so sweet you can almost taste them - total and complete eyecandy. July made a conscious effort to pick a completely different color palette for this film, picking rich ochres and jewel tones. The previous movie is light and hot, whereas this one is dark and cool. Interesting how something as simple as color can be so effective at setting up a mood for an entire film. Fun fact: Miranda July picked out the palette for The Future by laying out a set of pens from the Muji store and picking out the colors she was drawn to. Read about it here.

Vintage, Floral, & Patterns - Oh My!

I am so into this knotted shirt trend, it's not even funny. As a small gal, I'm always interested in finding creative and stylish ways to make my clothes fit my small frame. This is the third time I've knotted a top in the last week, and I don't see myself stopping anytime soon!! The skirt I snagged at an end-of-spring-sale at Anthropologie, and I have honestly had a really difficult time styling it. Such a loud shade of red AND a pattern - but I embraced the pattern-on-pattern trend that has also been surfacing, and I think this looks pretty spiffy, if I do say so myself.

Angels and Airwaves "LOVE"

Last night my little brother and I donned our Blink-182 attire to attend the one-night-only premiere and screening of the Angels and Airwaves movie LOVE. A film inspired by the grand theme of love, which started out with an LP of music about humanity, companionship, and the way relationships have been impacted by the growth of technology. The music then morphed into music videos and vignettes, which then turned into a movie that was five years in the making. Tom Delonge might be crazy, but he likes to dream big and has a seriously supportive community of hard working creative minds backing his somewhat whimsical and gigantic ideas.
As I watched this movie, I was reminded of Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey because it was clearly a huge inspiration for the director and filmmaker. The story told is that of two men, one who was the soul survivor of a southern Civil War infantry, and the other who was the soul survivor of a grander scheme alone on a space station for an indefinite amount of time. Note: Angels and Airwaves have a song titled "Soul Survivor", and blips from the song are mixed into the soundscape of the movie. The two stories collide in a really basic way that gravitates towards the richer aspects of human experience, and though they exist during completely different time and space, it all seems to make sense.

In addition to it being an interesting and enriching story, the movie laid on the shoulders of one actor whose performance was enough to carry the entire film. And then there's the grand scale of the sets which included an orbiting space station, that was built over the course of two years in the driveway of the director's parents house, and a Civil War battle scene which was constructed in six months in the ranch backyard of the director's parents property - all with the meager budget of $500,000. This film took five years to make and is a testament to following one's dreams and working really hard to achieve them. Plus, I really enjoyed the soundtrack.

After the film screening, AvA played a set of three songs to a live audience in Boston that was streamed to nearly 500 theaters across the country. Following the musical performance was a goofy and informal Q&A session with Tom, the director, and the star. Basically, my evening was strange and cool and awesome.

Now I know you're all wondering after my glowing review, where and when can I see this movie?! Sadly, you're going to have to wait until 11/11/11 to see this film, but it will be worth it because AvA is releasing LOVE alongside Love pt I and Love pt II, a double CD and movie set. It's gonna be epic.

The Wooden Nickel in North Judson, Indiana

This post is tied to the initial entry I wrote about my experience at Outstanding in the Field last week. The post about the actual meal is coming soon, but I thought I'd offer up some eye candy in the meantime. One thing I adore about small towns such as North Judson, Indiana is the integrity of the main street. This one was particularly tiny, but all of the buildings were original with many of their fixtures intact. I especially love painted brick advertising which Chicago has hidden pockets of - so naturally I had to make a stop by the Wooden Nickel for a photo or two.

My apologies for the relative blogging silence, I took a spur of the moment trip this weekend and I am gearing up for another weekend getaway this coming Friday, so things have been a bit scattered over here.

Some news to offer up is that I've officially moved over the the iPhone and I couldn't be happier! I'd been using a Droid for the last year and the operating system just couldn't seem to keep up with my usage. It's such a relief to be working on a well designed and efficient device. I purchased this skin made out of thinly cut repurposed wood for my phone, which I named Melody Day. And I am doing everything in my power to not drop it.

The lovely Kelsey of Laundry Magazine shared this outtake from the upcoming Miranda July film "The Future", and though this didn't make the cut for the final product, it serves as a wonderful and strange lesson to those of us with giant to-do lists and the endless things distracting us. Interestingly enough, I see Kelsey as one of the most productive and successful young woman in Chicago today, having launched her own magazine and line of chic and stylish bridal wear all by the age of 23. This girl is an inspiration, and my own local Miranda. You got it girl!

Outstanding In The Field Part I

On Monday night my mom and I left work early and drove 90 miles to North Judson, Indiana to attend a much anticipated Outstanding In The Field expertly prepared by local chef, Bill Kim - owner of Urban Belly and the Belly Shack in Chicago.

Outstanding In The Field is one of those once in a lifetime meals that happens out on a farm far away from the city, where produce is sourced on site, and the entire meal is composed of products created locally and sustainably. The idea behind the dinner is that it puts the chef and the farmer directly in touch with the consumer to create an outstanding and educational as well as life-changing meal. The dinner was served in four courses at a long white table in a wooded area of the farm.

As I got ready to leave for dinner Monday afternoon, I racked my brain with the question, what should I wear? I knew it was going to be hot, I knew there were going to be bugs, and I knew there was going to be some walking. I kept it simple with a little jersey dress, my new clogs, and really bold yet paired down accessories. Though I walked away with an inappropriate amount of bug bites, the meal was perfect down to every last bite, and I looked fabulous!

I know I almost never write about it on here, but my family is very serious about baseball, and not just baseball, but the Chicago White Sox in particular. I'd say this is a product of my parents growing up in Hyde Park, and also because it's nice to like a team that won the World Series in our lifetime (sorry Cubs fans).

Back in June my mom and brother attended a philanthropic event hosted by Gordon Beckham and Paul Konerko to raise money for the Children's Home and Aid Society. My mother entered their silent auction, and wound up making a generous donation worthy of an on-the-field opportunity for members of my family. Oh AND I was able to meet my favorite player, Gordon Beckham. Basically, this was one of those overwhelming, surreal, out of body experiences.

Oh you know, just hanging out with the 2005 World Series Cup.

This is how to dress like a fan without throwing a jersey on. Simply put: I am not a jersey wearing girl. My ways of showing support include wearing the team colors, rooting for the right team, and not missing the seventh inning stretch.

The package that my mom wound up winning in the silent auction also included tickets to box seating. Let's just say all you can eat buffet, drinks included, and a dessert tray after the third inning. It was quick a strange and fun experience, but I wouldn't trade it in for sitting in the crowd and yelling for the margarita man any day, hands down.

I had gazpacho and roasted vegetables with my hot dog. There is just something so silly about that, don't you think?

No One Belongs Here More Than You

Miranda July is a gifted filmmaker, artist, and writer. I wasn't familiar with her writing until a few years ago when my close friend Adam kept telling me to read her collection of short stories No One Belongs Here More Than You. Simple, to the point, honest, and dripping with human experience, these stories speak directly to anyone and everyone who has read the book cover to cover. I often buy this book as a gift for friends, and have owned several copies myself - having lost and lent this out countless times. It's a quick read and yet completely re-readable. Her characters are large, funny, and full. The situations they encounter question love, existence, and a whole lot of whys and hows. Simply put, this is one of my all-time favorite books and I think you should read it.

The Girl(s) Next Door

Yesterday I had the absolute pleasure of attending a mini-mid-week-blogger-meetup where I was finally able to catch up with Lisa and where I met Andrea and Anna. I have been following Lisa and Andrea for the last year, and I recently discovered Anna's blog, so you can only imagine how excited I was for this - despite the inappropriately sweaty weather.

We met up in Lincoln park, where we found a decent alley for snapping some quick and sweaty outfit shots - Andrea was a complete rockstar behind the camera. She clicked so quickly, gave incredible positive reinforcement, and managed to do it all in a short skirt and platforms. New hero: Andrea. Here are some photographs of her doing her thing!

In addition to photographing the gals being photographed, I was able to step on the other side of the camera with an actual photographer as opposed to my tripod. You'd think after the years I put in watching America's Next Top Model that I would know exactly what to do, but dang, getting your picture taken can be a challenge! I just told myself in Tyra's voice "smile with your eyes".

After the smoldering photoshoot, we popped by Lori's Shoes where I eyed some gorgeous Frye boots in my size. Then we stopped by a new boutique on Armitage called Comfort Me where we met with the new owners and pawed through some gorgeous pieces. There is a shower curtain I NEED as soon as I move out, and a few hand-dyed garments that caught my eye. If you're in the neighborhood, please check out this new space. It is perfect.

Yesterday evening was such an absolute treat and I'm really looking forward to seeing all of the gals again soon. Which reminds me - there is a Chicago blogger meetup happening August 20th, and LISA IS ORGANIZING IT.

Pitchfork Festival 2K11

Pitchfork this year was one of the best for me - possibly because I was only there for one day. Is it so terrible to finally admit that I'm not a huge fan of music festivals, and that this year I was unfamiliar with a majority of the bands that were on the bill? I went on Saturday just to soak up some sun, drink some beers, eat some barbecue, and bump into a lot of people I haven't seen a long time. Was I street spotted for my style? No, but I'm pretty sure I looked fabulous AND I didn't have any issues with the heat.

Basically, I've come to the conclusion that for me, Pitchfork is just a place to see and be seen. I don't go for the music anymore, I just go for the vibe. As far as music goes, I have some shows I'm really looking forward to coming up - including Blink-182 and Beirut.

So cheers to another Pitchfork, and dear friends coming in from out of town! Let's do it again next year!

Other People We Married

My book of the month for May/June was Other People We Married by the lovely Emma Straub. I loved this book so much that it actually made it into my Top Six Picks for June 2011!!

I think that being in an academic setting and constantly reading non-fiction while juggling course work, clubs, and my social life set me up for being drawn to short stories. In high school and during breaks, I had the time to focus my energies on reading full length books and novels, but during the last few years, I'm finding that finishing a book for pleasure is proving to be more difficult. Hence my goal to read a book a month.

That said, this book of short stories was so incredible, so perfectly structured, so simple and direct that I read it quite quickly and am considering re-reading it! I read half of the stories on the train to Galesburg at the end of May, I just couldn't put it down! Emma Straub's writing is very direct, taking root in the thoughts of the main character's who are often lonesome female types. It's interesting, even if I didn't know that the author was a woman, there was something that felt feminine about this book. The characters felt so real, dripping with honest reactions and feelings towards their diverse situations.

Environment plays a very important role in these stories. They each take place in different settings, both in the US and internationally, in towns big and small, remote and metropolitan. It's as though the environment is directly related to what is happening to each character having such an effect that it's as though the space in which they occupy is just as much a character as the characters themselves. And to celebrate the settings, Emma Straub is currently embarking on a book tour in which she does a reading of each story in it's rightful location. Amazing.

If you like this book, you will also like the work of Deb Olin-Unfurth and Miranda July. I highly recommend reading No One Belongs Here More than You and Minor Robberies for a quick and satisfying read by other amazing lady writers.

For those of you that are invested in the German staples I have implemented into my vacation diet, then wonder no more, I did indeed eat wiener schnitzel. And I loved it. We went to this restaurant off the beaten path of the Saint George neighborhood, and after quickly skimming the translated menu I knew my decision was easy. Wiener schnitzel it is. As we anxiously awaited the arrival of our food, which took a long long long time (things move slowly here), we discussed all of the things we were going to eat upon Adolfo's return to Chicago, making ourselves even hungrier. FYI, I love hot wings and need to go to Buffalo Joe's immediately.

The schnitzel arrived and was hot, crispy, salty, juicy, and gigantic! The breaded cutlet was placed upon a bed of pan fried potatoes, and came with a delicious salad in a mustard vinaigrette dressing. We squeezed out lemon slices onto our meat, and dug in.

La Famille Croque

One of my few goals of this trip was to eat some German food. I made hamburgers my second night here, because one must eat a hamburger in Hamburg. I had one of the best slices of cake ever. I drank German beer (Jever and Beck's)... but then there are German sandwiches - the croque.

Adolfo and his friend took me to La Famille for the best croque in Hamburg. A croque is a gigantic sandwich, filled with delicious things of your choosing, and framed by slices of crispy toasted bread. I ordered the Mykonos croque - and it was honestly one of the best sandwiches EVER. This specific sammich had a slice of spiced turkey sausage, lettuce, tomato, red onion, cucumber, mysterious spices, and a yogurt sauce. It was big, crispy, and messy enough that it had to be eaten with a fork and knife! I know, eating a sandwich with a fork and knife! What is this, Chicago style pizza??

We ate our croques in the garden patio behind the restaurant and I almost wished I had ordered a full size rather than the mini because it was so darn delicious. If you are ever in the neighborhood, EAT A CROQUE HERE.

Ruisdael Clouds

As a Midwesterner, it should come as no surprise that talking about "the weather" is "a thing". Our winters are cold, our summers are hot, and as you Chicagoans know, when it rains it pours. As a veteran of crazy weather, I didn't think there was anything I hadn't seen. But what I really wasn't expecting was how drastically the weather changes from hour to hour here in Hamburg.

When getting ready to pack for this trip, I looked up the weekly weather to get an idea for what I would need to wear. The day-to-day report showed me highs in the upper-70's and lows in the high-50's/mid-60's. I was shown pictures of clouds, sun, and rain - but nothing really prepared me for reaching highs, lows, rain, sun, and clouds all in the span of a few hours. It's safe to say that the female lead in Part 1 of Wong Kar-Wai's Chungking Express had it right, always wear a raincoat and bring sunglasses. There was even one day when it was pouring and completely sunny all at once. Yes, there was a gigantic rainbow.

I think the variety of clouds here is what really gets me though. Every time I look up at the sky, I picture Ruisdael looking up at the sky, and then making one of his amazing paintings.

The Best Cake in Hamburg

Last Saturday Adolfo, Julia and I tried to go sit by the lake, but as soon as we got there, it started to rain. Typical Hamburg weather, making plans difficult. But there's nothing like a little bit of flexibility. So instead, we went to Cafe Gnosa for a slice of the best cake in Hamburg.

My obsession with strawberries and fascination with the mysterious and delicious strawberries of the German variety made my decision easy. Plus, look at how darn pretty this thing was. I wasn't sure if I was supposed to marvel at it or eat it.

SPOILER ALERT: THIS REALLY WAS ONE OF THE BEST PIECE OF CAKE I HAVE EVER HAD. The sponge cake was so spongey, the frosting was so light and simple, the strawberries were sweet and red with a thin layer of gelatin. And it was all washed down nicely with the yummy coffee service (cookie definitely included).

THE MOTHER OF ALL THEME PARTIES

Anthony just sent me this link chronicling the painstakingly clever work that went into the mother of all theme parties: an eccentric Peggy Guggenheim party based around the artists that she knew, loved and supported.

People dressed for the occasion in eccentric, classy, and cool outfits - but it wasn't just the look that made this party a success. The food matched the theme!!! They served up dishes inspired by both Peggy and the art she collected.

I'm including some of my favorites, obviously the Titanic reference in the oysters is one of them.

In short, I just want to say that I love theme parties, I love art, and I love Peggy Guggenheim. Anthony, we have to find a way to throw a party of this sort in Chicago. I'm a master of the salted caramel brownie, we both know a lot about art and food - LET'S DO THIS.

On the day excursions I have been going on, I have noticed the wonderful assortment of flowers whether they're wild, pruned, or picked. The great colors seem to pop from the aged buildings, the neutral brick, and the often white and cloudy sky. It's funny, in the last few days, I have spent more time sitting outside along the lakes, river, and in parks than I have in Chicago during this entire summer!

I'm making it a personal goal to spend more time enjoying the outdoors when I get back to town. I solemnly promise!

Yesterday Adolfo and I traipsed out to Blankenese, a beautiful hillside neighborhood that leads down to the Elbe river. There are few roads where cars can go when you get into the more residential part of this neighborhood, so we enjoyed a stroll through the tiny walkways between the beautiful houses and gardens until we reached the waterfront. After, we headed to another botanic garden, which I much preferred to Planten un Blomen. I had Adolfo shoot a few outfit photos throughout the day.

This outfit was comfy, and perfect for the weather which goes from hot to cool, from windy to still, from rainy to sunny. Hamburg has some of the most temperamental weather of anywhere I have ever been. My only regret with this outfit is that I wore tights under the boots, which made it impossible for me to feel the sand under my feet. Note to self: don't wear tights on impromptu walks on the beach.

homemade pizza is my life

After the perfect day of wandering around Hamburg, we settled in for a relaxing evening of gossiping, virtually trying on Warby Parkers, and making homemade pizza with fresh European produce. This pizza is one of the best I have ever had in my entire life. I'm pretty sure that as soon as Adolfo and I are living with each other pizza is going to become one of the staples in our collective diet.

This pizza was especially tasty being composed of caramelized onions, red/green/and yellow peppers, baby tomatoes, ball and shredded mozzarella, spicy pepperoni, and tomato sauce.

Yesterday involved some store browsing, the botanic gardens, walking underneath the Elbe river, and trying German ice cream - which isn't gelato but is still perfection on a cone in it's own right. We started the day off in an expensive shopping district, and after trying on a bunch of different cute pieces of clothing at Cos, I didn't find anything that fit me just right, opting to spend the day away from the stores outside soaking up the beautiful German sun.

We headed to Planten un Blomen, one of the major landscaped botanic gardens in Hamburg. I enjoyed a bagel outside and then we headed into the greenhouses to check out some of the exotic flora. My faves included seeing the banana tree, a living fossil, and "Mickey Mouse" plants (red with big black seedlings that look like Mickey's nose). We spent a good part of the day sitting in the gardens, playing with an adorable wandering baby, and gossiping in English and German. Adolfo, you are a fabulous translator!

After the garden, we walked to a few viewpoints for pictures, then took a walk through an underground tunnel to cross the Elbe river. It was crazy! We took an insane set of steps down, then walked a narrow path alongside a single car road for what seemed like forever. We took an elevator up, and when we came out, we were on the other side of the Elbe. Adolfo bought us eis, and I had shokolade and egg nog flavored cream, a winning combination. Satisfied by our eis, we headed back across the river, to the train, and home for dinner.

First Night in the 'Burg

After hitting up Adolfo's glorious art opening we headed around town for my first orientation to Hamburg. It was really amazing seeing Adolfo's photos on display and then going to some of the actual places where he shot them. We visited HafenCity, an architectural "future city" on the site of what used to be riverbank warehouses - now under construction and looking at completion near 2020. I've never seen this many cranes in one condensed space. The emptiness of this uninhabited area is both calming and eerie.

From HafenCity we went for a walk along the river, making our way over bridges and through some of the remaining medieval alleyways in Hamburg towards the steeple of the now destroyed Saint Nicholas Church - a piece of history from bombings that occurred during World War II. As we looked up at the tower, rain began to fall, and we headed home for a much needed night of sleep.

I am officially in Hamburg, Germany having an amazing time with my best friend Adolfo. Among his many talents, which include fluency in Germany, a working knowledge of all things fashionable, and a strong background in Biology, Adolfo is a gifted artist and photographer. The work he has accomplished over the last year while living here in Hamburg is outstanding and he was recently featured in an exhibition in a new space in Hafencity. His exhibition Sister Cities: Hamburg Meets Chicago was met with an enthusiastic response and I feel so lucky to have been able to attend his opening. Please check out his website!

Top SIX PICKS: JUNE

I have been so busy running around and trying new things that I seem to have fallen behind on my Top Six Picks! Some of the things in this list are, the Dodos album in particular, have been in my life for longer than the month of June but are still exceptionally important to me. Let me know what you think!

1) Other People We Married by Emma Straub: As part of my book-of-the-month challenge, I read Emma Straub as my June book. I head about her initially through one of Flavorpill's many top-ten lists, this one being Creative Book Tours by Adventurous Authors. I'm not sure if it was her charming portrait, or the fact that each story in her collection of short stories takes place in a completely different American city - of which she is visiting and doing a reading from, meta right? But reading the book review and visiting her darling website made me buy the book immediately. I loved the book cover-to-cover. Her short stories are very simple yet cut right to the core of human experience giving the reader a realistic and poignant view into the lives of each of her characters, who by virtue of their environment (ie city/location/town), find themselves in very specific situations completely informed by the spaces in which they occupy. I finished this book way too quickly and I am eagerly awaiting for her to come do a reading in the Midwest!

2) No Color by Dodos: According to my lastfm, I have listened to this album close to 200 times, and certain songs from it around 350 times. This is basically the only music I have had in rotation since March, and I'm not tired of it. I love how in this recording they still sound loud and rocky, but it's a more polished and high quality recording. Lot's of the pops and echoes from their earlier albums are completely missing, leaving you with lyrics of heartbreak, loss, and breakup - with beautiful guitar work, unexpected shifts in songs, and accompaniment by the amazing voice of Neko Case. I'm pretty sure this is my cd of 2011 thus far. Companions is my favorite track, check out the weird video here! I also had the chance to see them earlier this month at The Metro, and it was such a fantastic show. Lots of jumping around, screaming lyrics, and dancing like an idiot with my friends.

3) O.N.E. Coconut Water: If you don't follow my twitter, you probably should. Because you would already know that I have a serious addiction to coconut water. It's a weird food fad right now, but for me I don't think it's going anywhere. Coconut water is completely refreshing, tastes good, and is good for you. I've also been doing some cooking with coconut oil, and it's got a really nice flavor and is loading with good natural fats. It's funny - I don't drink soda, and I only go out for drinks a night or two a week (if that), so I like to think of coconut water as my major daily indulgence. I think being "bad" never tasted this good. I've tried Vita Coco and Naked Coconut Water, but O.N.E. is my favorite.

4) The Burger at Three Aces, Chicago: I've been to Three Aces twice in the last month, mainly for the patio and cocktails - but since trying this to-die-for burger, I have seriously been having mouth watering cravings for it. It's weird knowing that I am traveling in Hamburg, the namesake city of Hamburgers, and all I can think of is how badly I want a burger from Three Aces. I think it's a combination of the amazing juicy patty, the homemade sliced pickle, and the bacon-y jam that is spread on the bun - not to mention the crunchy hand cut potato fries that make me dream about this bad boy. If you're in the city, a carnivore, and ready to chow down, I highly recommend this with one of their many beers. PS for more on Three Aces, read my review of the restaurant.

5) My Turquoise Beaded Necklace: I picked this necklace up on a family trip to Hawaii my senior year of high school, and have worn it almost every day of the last month. Never before has this necklace featured so heavily into my wardrobe rotation, but for whatever reason it has become a complete staple in every look that I've put together. Do you have an item in your wardrobe that you suddenly see differently and it happens to work with everything you wear?

6) French Affair by Essie: If you haven't already visited my nail blog, you should!! I've been keeping an eye on the fun trends in manicures and pedicures, as well as colors growing in popularity. I love how sweet and soft this color is, and how with any color combination it completely girls up my look. I'm also a fan of Clambake from the 2011 summer collection.

Aside from freaking out over what to wear on my trip to Germany tomorrow, I'd say that this weekend was a complete success. I ate plenty of barbecue, had an assortment of delicious cold salads, enjoyed berry crisps and cobblers, and even managed to make room for healthy homemade gazpacho. I also found time to see The Tree of Life AND Midnight in Paris over the course of the last few days and I loved them both. If you love art history, literature, and beautiful images then both of these films are for you. Additionally, I went on another date with the mysterious missed connection, and after seeing Midnight in Paris we went for a long walk through a part of the Loop that I have never been to! We wound up finding a nice spot on the edge of a fountain in a hidden park I didn't know existed talking until well past midnight. It was a quintessentially splendid date.

I'm going to be away from the blog until the 14th, I'll see you all on Bastille Day.

Randolph Street Market: June Recap

Last weekend was the Randolph Street Market - and the weather couldn't have been more perfect!! Gorgeous blue skies with temps in the high 70's, making shopping and photographing stalls an absolute dream. I noticed a lot of perfectly timed Americana, plenty of strange cat-related kitsch, and some gorgeous Hudson Bay inspired textiles. I'm heading to Germany on Tuesday so I had to be vigilant about my pocketbook, but I couldn't resist walking away with an amazing vintage Italian straw hat (that continues to score me compliments daily)!!
